How to use the Bible Study Guide:

How to use the Bible Study Guide:

1. Pray. Ask the Lord to open your eyes, that you might behold wondrous things out of his Law (Ps. 119:18).

2. Read Sunday's passage. Feel free to read it more than once, or in another translation.

3. Review the sermon outline. Try to see how the points came out of the text.

4. Answer the questions below. Focus on personal application.

5. Pray. Praise and thank the Lord, then ask him to work in mighty ways.

Remember, we live not by bread alone, but by every word which proceeds from the mouth of God (Dt. 8:3; Mt. 4:4).

The Passage: John 1:35–42 ESV

The Passage: John 1:35–42 ESV

35 The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38 Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. 40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).

Intro: What would it be like to meet Jesus? Today we consider what happened for a few people who actually did. We turn to John 1:35–42, as Jesus calls his first disciples.

I. When you hear about Jesus, don't wait! Follow him (v. 35–37). Andrew and his friend had been disciples of John the Baptist. They knew he was not the Messiah, but was sent to prepare the way. When John saw Jesus and said, "Behold the Lamb of God," they realized that the moment had finally come. They departed John began following Jesus. Similarly, when we hear the truth about Jesus, we must depart whatever we used to do or belief, and begin following him. It can happen anywhere, at any time, in many ways. The key is this: if you hear about Jesus, don't wait! Follow him.

II. Whatever it is you think you want, Jesus invites you to come to him and find what you truly need (v. 38–39). Jesus's first words in this Gospel are "What are you seeking?" It's such a penetrating question. Ask it to yourself. What is it you really want? What do you think will satisfy the longings of your soul? Is it health? Is it wealth? Is it something else? Whatever it is, you will only find what you truly need in Jesus. Thankfully, he invites us, saying, "Come and see."

III. If you've found Jesus, you'll want to bring others to Jesus, too (v. 40–42). Having departed John and arrived with Jesus, Andrew immediately wants to bring his brother to Jesus. Now, he goes on a "round trip" to get Simon and bring him back to Jesus. Note his urgency (he went that same evening) and his strong faith ("We have found the Messiah!") Would we all have such conviction, and such determination to help our friends and neighbors come to Jesus.

Conclusion:  If you have come to Jesus in faith, then let Jesus satisfy you, and Andrew inspire you. And if you haven't come to Jesus yet, consider that just as he knew who Simon was and had a plan and purpose for him (you are Cephas!), so he knows who you are and has a plan and purpose for you. Come to Jesus! You've heard about him, so don't wait. He will satisfy your soul. He will send you out on mission. Look to his cross, his empty tomb, his scars, his heart, and beleive in him. Come, and you will see!
